Another thought: JAMES MIGHT BE ALIVE!!!
Remember how Rowling has been avoiding the description of switching spells? Could it be switching bodies? Do you think that James switched bodies with someone as an extra precaution against the Voldemort threat? Possibly.
But who did he switch bodies with? Lupin of course. Read every part of POA that has Lupin in it. Notice anything?
Yeah, I've heard this theory. Not likely, but more so then Dumbledore. However...that would almost make Tonks his mother-in-law...wouldn't it?
